Mitchell Fairbairn, a 34-year-old Canadian tourist from Ontario, was convicted of animal cruelty on October 20 for stealing Peachy the Flamingo from its habitat at the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas and taking it to his hotel room. He admitted to drinking between 30-40 beers before entering the wildlife area around 5 AM on March 3 but claimed he never intended to harm the bird, stating it was a drunken prank. However, Peachy, a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo, suffered physical injuries including torn feathers and blood loss due to Fairbairn's actions. Prosecutors argued that Fairbarn’s act was malicious and willful, leading to his conviction on both felony and misdemeanor animal cruelty charges. He faces up to four years in prison for the felony charge and an additional six months for the misdemeanor, with sentencing scheduled for December 1.
