Germany’s far-right AfD party suffered a cyber attack in September 2026 that resulted in the theft of more than 421,000 emails, including messages from co-leader Alice Weidel and co-founder Alexander Gauland. Hackers accessed an email service provider used by the party and published summaries of stolen emails on a website, along with photos of ID cards, bank statements, membership applications, and lists from local branches. The AfD confirmed to AFP that "a small number of e-mail accounts – most of which had not been used for years" were compromised but stated the attack was quickly detected and halted. The party is now reviewing what has been published online. This incident comes as the anti-immigration, Russia-friendly AfD leads national opinion polls and recently won two state elections.
anti-immigration, Russia-friendly AfD is topping national opinion polls and came first in two state elections last month, comfortably ahead of Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s centre-right CDU.
The party scored its biggest win in Saxony-Anhalt, where it hopes to form Germany’s first far-right state government since World War II.
