At least 14 miners were killed and seven others injured when an illegal gold mine collapsed on Monday in the remote Chambero sector of Santa Barbara de Iscuande municipality, located in Colombia’s Nariño province. Disaster response official Jorge Tovar Castillo reported that between 12 to 15 additional miners remain missing following the accident. Search and rescue operations have concluded, with local authorities handling the situation despite difficult communication conditions due to the area's remoteness, surrounded by dense rainforest accessible only by boat or small aircraft.
Nariño Governor Luis Alfonso Escobar noted that informal and unregulated mining is common in rural Colombia, often lacking adequate safety measures. This incident highlights ongoing fatal risks associated with such practices.
