Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Kyiv received no early warning from its Western allies about Russian ballistic missile attacks on Sunday evening. This is the latest in a series of such incidents, raising concerns among Ukrainian officials that Washington might be withholding intelligence to pressure Kyiv into making concessions to Moscow.
The attack damaged energy facilities and resulted in one death and two injuries. Yuri Ihnat, a spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force, confirmed on television that Ukraine did not receive prior notice before the missile barrage hit power plants around 11pm local time. However, an earlier warning was issued ahead of another strike at 3am.
Zelenskyy's statement highlights increasing tensions between Kyiv and Washington over intelligence sharing amid escalating attacks by Russia on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Recent weeks have seen a surge in Russian aerial assaults targeting civilian areas and critical energy facilities, exploiting Ukraine’s stretched air defense capabilities. This includes using thousands of attack drones, exacerbating the situation as winter approaches and heating demands increase.
Meanwhile, territorial gains on the ground remain minimal for Russia, leading to intensified efforts to disrupt daily life through targeted strikes on urban centers and infrastructure. The Kremlin is reportedly attempting to exploit Ukraine's limited air defense systems, particularly shortages of US-manufactured Patriot missile interceptors, to pressure Kyiv into accepting Moscow’s terms for peace.
These developments have also brought President Zelenskyy into conflict with former US president Donald Trump, who has publicly criticized the Ukrainian leader and suggested compromising positions. Despite these challenges, Zelenskyy continues to seek constructive dialogue with Western partners while emphasizing the need for them to acknowledge the reality on the ground in Ukraine.
