On October 18, 2026, a significant and tragic fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, approximately 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. The blaze started near the base and rapidly spread due to strong winds, crossing into the nearby Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61. Premier Danielle Smith described it as a "tragic fire," while Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed condolences for those affected.
The incident led to injuries requiring hospitalization; by October 19, 39 people were hospitalized, with 19 in critical condition, and later reports confirmed that four soldiers had died. Major-General Wade Rutland revealed that a grass fire initially seemed contained but suddenly intensified when winds changed direction, engulfing soldiers within minutes.
The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service is investigating the incident using a board of inquiry to determine causes and recommend preventive measures for future incidents. King Charles III expressed his shock and sadness over the tragedy, sending condolences to those affected and praising emergency responders' efforts.
