On October 18, 2026, a significant and tragic fire broke out at Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Wainwright in Alberta, Canada. The blaze originated near the base and rapidly spread due to strong winds, crossing into the nearby Municipal District of Wainwright No. 61. Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that a "serious incident" caused a major fire at CFB Wainwright, affecting many military personnel. Premier Danielle Smith described it as a “significant and tragic” event.
By October 19, 2026, the fire resulted in four soldiers killed and 39 injured, with 19 people in critical condition. The incident was caused by a fast-moving grass fire that suddenly intensified when wind directions shifted abruptly. Major-General Wade Rutland of the Canadian Forces stated that soldiers went from seeing no fire to being engulfed within less than a minute.
The military is expected to conduct an investigation through a board of inquiry, which may compel evidence and make recommendations to prevent similar incidents in the future. King Charles III expressed his condolences over the tragedy, extending his thoughts to the families and friends of those affected.
