More than 200 firefighters rushed to Mount Loretto on Saturday evening, October 19, 2026, after a four-alarm fire broke out around 5:45 p.m. in an empty warehouse that had been vacant for five years. FDNY chief of operations Kevin Woods reported heavy damage and a collapsed roof at the scene, with firefighters maintaining a collapse zone to ensure safety.
The historic Old Church of St. Joachim and St. Anne, known for its appearance in exterior shots of the baptism scene from Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” was among several other buildings on the grounds that were spared by the heroic efforts of firefighters, despite high winds fanning the flames.
Mount Loretto also houses two schools, a senior center, and numerous other structures that remained unharmed due to the quick response of emergency services. The Fire Marshal’s office will investigate the cause of the blaze.
