On October 18, 2026, the Saudi-led coalition announced that two pilots were killed in a helicopter crash near the border with Yemen. The incident occurred when an AH-6i reconnaissance helicopter, part of the Saudi National Guard Ministry, crashed due to what was described as a technical malfunction inside Najran Region of Saudi Arabia. However, Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree claimed earlier that same day his forces had shot down a Saudi Apache helicopter in the area while it was targeting Houthi positions along the border. It remains unclear if both sides are referring to the same incident.
The crash marks the first military fatalities for the coalition since July when hostilities with the Houthis intensified. The conflict has seen significant escalation, including an attack by the Houthis on Riyadh’s international airport a week earlier that killed 13 people, the deadliest in over a decade. Yemen's four-year truce ended as the group captured strategic territory along the Red Sea coast recently, further complicating regional stability and trade routes.
