On October 17, 2026, a super tanker carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil caught fire after striking a mine in the Strait of Hormuz, according to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The IRGC navy accused the tanker of attempting to pass through an unauthorized route and turning off its positioning and radar systems to evade detection. Iran's Fars news agency shared video footage showing a vessel ablaze. This incident occurred after Tehran seized control over the Strait in late February, blocking one-fifth of global oil consumption. The IRGC stated that any ship deactivating navigation systems would be considered "hostile," while Washington has responded by guiding ships along a route near Oman’s coast.
