Katie Zacharia, who was appointed as the White House Press Secretary just five days prior, was fired suddenly by Donald Trump on October 17, 2026, while she was conducting an interview with The Wall Street Journal at her desk in the West Wing. Zacharia had previously worked for the Department of Homeland Security and currently served as a communications adviser for Trump Media & Technology Group, which owns Truth Social. She replaced Karoline Leavitt, who left the role in late August after the birth of her second child. The decision to fire Zacharia came just days after she made headlines for reading from a script during her first press briefing and speaking for only 14 minutes.
President Donald Trump may have just had his worst week in Washington of his second term.
White House press secretary Katie Zacharia is out after mere days on the job, making first-term Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci’s 11 days in his post look like a Robert Byrd-length tenure by comparison.
