On October 16, 80 masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinians and set fire to olive trees in the village of Abu Falah during the annual olive harvest in the West Bank. The attack injured at least two people, including a journalist from the Washington Post who was hospitalized after being assaulted. Around 12 Palestinians, some with dual citizenship, were also reportedly hurt. Videos showed settlers using slingshots to launch rocks and torching trees, while Israeli military vehicles arrived but did not stop the violence; soldiers fired tear gas at Palestinian villagers defending themselves.
The attacks disrupted the olive harvest, a crucial source of income for tens of thousands of families in the northern West Bank. Local officials and human rights groups accuse Israeli authorities of failing to prevent such incidents, with some alleging that soldiers actively aided or protected settlers during these assaults. The violence has intensified ahead of Israel's upcoming election on October 27, raising concerns about its political implications and potential for further escalation.
Residents and human rights organisations say Israeli authorities have done little to stop settler attacks. They allege that soldiers have sometimes helped settlers, protected them or stood by while Palestinian villages came under assault.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported last month that more than 1,600 attacks had been recorded across the territory between January and August.
Yesh Din and other rights groups say those responsible are rarely arrested or indicted.
