Tyler Ulrich, a 21-year-old sophomore safety at Southern Nazarene University (SNU) in Oklahoma, died five days after sustaining a "traumatic injury" during a game against Ouachita Baptist on October 8. The nature of his injuries and the cause of death have not been disclosed by SNU officials. Ulrich was hurt during a 49-14 loss that lasted nearly an hour due to medical attention he received on the field before being transported to a hospital.
SNU President Keith Newman announced Ulrich's passing, expressing condolences from the university community and urging prayers for his family and friends. The school has canceled its upcoming game against Southwestern Oklahoma State University as a result of this tragic incident. Coach Dustin Hada described Ulrich as an example of "quiet strength" who brought joy to those around him.
Ulrich had been with SNU since his freshman year, making 16 starts in 20 games and ranking third on the team for tackles. His death highlights the risks faced by college football players and underscores the emotional impact such incidents have on university communities.
