On October 13, 2026, two ships off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast were hit by drones, with one sinking and another damaged, prompting Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev to condemn the attacks as "absolutely unacceptable." The Ukrainian-owned ship "Chelsea 3," sailing under Maltese flag, was struck by three drones about 18 nautical miles off Bulgaria's coast, causing minor injuries to five of its crew members, comprising seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis. Radev stated there is no clear evidence of the perpetrators but that the attacks benefit Russia, indicating he would summon the Russian ambassador.
A week earlier on October 6th, another ship was hit by drones off Bulgaria’s coast, leading to alarm and outrage within both Bulgaria and the EU. The incidents highlight concerns over the Middle Corridor, a trade route from Asia through Europe via railways, roads, and sea that the EU aims to expand despite recent security threats.
On October 15th, at least seven sailors went missing after drones struck two tankers near Romania’s Black Sea coast, setting them ablaze. Unlike previous attacks off Bulgaria, these incidents occurred within Romanian territorial waters. NATO is now considering strengthening defenses in the Black Sea region due to escalating tensions and security concerns.
