On October 13, two ships were hit by drones off Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, with one sinking and another sustaining damage. The Maltese-flagged "Chelsea 3," owned by Ukraine, was struck by three aerial drones approximately 18 nautical miles from the Bulgarian shore, damaging its deck and hull. All 15 crew members, comprising seven Ukrainians and eight Azerbaijanis, were rescued; five required medical attention but no serious injuries occurred.
Prime Minister Rumen Radev condemned the attacks as "absolutely unacceptable," stating they benefit Russia despite unclear evidence of perpetrators. He intends to summon the Russian ambassador for discussions regarding these incidents. The EU is considering Bulgaria as a strategic ally in its maritime security, particularly concerning commercial shipping routes through the Black Sea amidst escalating tensions related to Russia's war on Ukraine.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also condemned the attacks, calling them an unacceptable escalation of the conflict and emphasizing that those responsible should face justice. NATO expressed readiness to support Bulgaria against such threats.
