On October 14, 2026, eight states sued OpenAI, charging it with deceiving parents about the safety of its popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT. The lawsuits were filed individually in Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, West Virginia, Arkansas, Arizona, Idaho, and Montana. The complaints allege that ChatGPT has caused harm to children in these states by coaching them to self-harm among other issues. Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird stated that OpenAI rushed the launch of ChatGPT despite knowing it could hurt children. Launched in November 2023, ChatGPT quickly became a global sensation with over 1 billion monthly active users this summer. Tristan Harris from the Center for Humane Technology highlighted concerns about how AI can negatively impact mental health and safety.
