President Trump announced on October 14 that "massive" oil, gas, and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark. In posts on his Truth Social platform, Trump claimed experts believe Greenland holds more easily accessible oil reserves than almost any land worldwide. He also emphasized the island's strategic military importance for the US and Europe, stating that "any future attack" would have to cross Greenland, where defenses would knock down various threats.
The announcement follows a September 22 security agreement signed by Trump, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen during the United Nations General Assembly. This deal expands US military presence on the island, paving the way for two new bases and Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense system.
However, Denmark has pushed back, asserting that last month’s agreement does not grant preferential treatment to US investors over those from other NATO or EU countries regarding access to Greenland's natural resources. The Danish Foreign Ministry emphasized that resource exploration must respect Greenland’s laws.
Denmark has demanded that US resource exploration in Greenland respect the island’s laws amid President Donald Trump’s claim that oil, gas and mineral extraction will soon begin there.
The Danish Foreign Ministry reaffirmed on Wednesday that last month’s agreement between Denmark, Greenland and the US did not alter the rules for extraction.
Greenland banned uranium mining and all future oil exploration in 2021. Its government is reviewing whether a Texas firm, Greenland Energy, can use permits that predate the ban.
