The Aporia
On October 14, 2026, President Donald Trump announced on his Truth Social platform that "massive" oil, gas, and mineral exploration is preparing to begin in Greenland. He cited experts who claim the amount of easily accessible oil there exceeds that of most other lands globally. Trump also emphasized Greenland's strategic importance for U.S. defense, stating any future attack would have to cross through Greenland where "our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet conceived." This announcement follows a security agreement signed between the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland in August that expands American military presence on the island, including two new bases and Trump's "Golden Dome" missile defense system.
Greenland, which lies on the shortest route for missiles between Russia and the United States, represents a highly strategic location for Trump’s desired “Golden Dome” defence shield.
In August, media reports of a US oil company’s preparatory operations in a remote region of eastern Greenland left locals and authorities on the island uneasy.
Trump signed a security deal with the leaders of Greenland and Denmark in September. Under the 10-page pact, the US will build two military bases in southern and eastern Greenland.
