NASA’s Perseverance rover, which landed on Mars in February 2021, recently surpassed the driving record of 45.2 kilometers (28.1 miles) set by the Opportunity rover, making it the vehicle that has traveled farthest on another planet's surface. The milestone was reached after more than five and a half years, with Perseverance now focusing its mission on exploring Jezero Crater to investigate ancient terrain believed to have once held water and possibly hosted microbial life billions of years ago. Engineers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory expect the rover to continue functioning well into the 2030s, potentially doubling its current driving distance. The achievement highlights advancements in robotic technology that enable extended exploration on Mars.
