The Aporia
Former Hurricane Rachel caused significant damage along the Long Beach Peninsula boardwalk on Friday morning in Southern California. Powerful waves from the storm tore apart sections of the boardwalk, with KTLA's helicopter capturing chunks floating out to sea during high tide around 9 a.m. Floodwaters inundated nearby streets and patios, exacerbating erosion that is threatening beachfront homes. Fire officials had already red-tagged one home and yellow-tagged two others due to safety concerns; all properties were unoccupied at the time. Crews assessed further damage on Friday to determine if additional evacuations might be necessary as the situation could worsen over Sunday night into Monday, with stronger swells and high tides expected. The National Weather Service predicts a severe storm surge on Monday that poses an even greater threat to coastal structures.
