The Aporia
On October 5, 2023, President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, a US Army psychiatrist convicted of carrying out a mass shooting at Fort Hood in Texas on November 5, 2009. The attack left 14 people dead, including an unborn baby, and wounded 32 others. Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced the decision following a recommendation by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Hasan will be the first soldier executed after a court-martial since Pvt. John Bennett in 1961. The execution date is yet to be determined but must occur within 60 to 150 days of approval according to Army policy. During his trial, Hasan admitted to conducting the shooting and showed no attempt to defend himself against the charges, expressing a desire for execution. The attack was linked to anti-US military sentiment regarding occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as online communications with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. This marks the first US military execution since 1961.
