The Aporia
On October 7, Kosovo's parliament elected economist Justina Shiroka Pula as the country's new president, narrowly avoiding snap parliamentary elections. The vote took place just before a constitutional deadline in the 120-seat assembly, where she secured 81 votes, one more than needed. This election follows months of political deadlock between the ruling Vetevendosje party and the opposition Democratic Party of Kosovo. They agreed to limit the powers of the Kosovo war crimes court in The Hague, an agreement that led to protests earlier this week with police using tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators demanding changes be approved. The new president stated her mandate belongs to all citizens, emphasizing unity despite previous political instability due to difficulty in forming coalitions for presidential elections.
