The Aporia
Christopher Saunders, a former Bishop of Broome aged 76, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for sexually abusing two young Aboriginal men between 2008 and 2019. The trial, which took place in the Western Australian District Court, found him guilty on one count of sexual penetration without consent and twelve counts of indecent assault. Saunders systematically groomed his victims by hosting alcohol-fueled "shirts-off" gatherings at church-owned properties using church funds. He will be eligible for parole after serving four years and six months but must complete his sentence unless acquitted on appeal. The Bishop, who was the longest-serving Catholic cleric in Australia before his resignation in 2020 due to accusations of misconduct, remains one of the most senior Catholic leaders convicted of sexual abuse in the country's history.
