The Aporia
Christopher Alan Saunders, a 76-year-old former Bishop of Broome, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for sexually abusing two young Aboriginal men between 2008 and 2019 while serving as one of the most senior Catholic clerics in Australia. The court found him guilty of one count of sexual penetration without consent and twelve counts of unlawful and indecent assault, among other charges; he was acquitted of six additional charges due to lack of evidence.
Saunders systematically groomed his victims by hosting "shirts-off" parties at church-owned properties and using church funds. He would supply alcohol and food while the men wore only boxer shorts, engaging in wrestling and boxing with them before sexually abusing them. One victim described feeling like a toy that Saunders used, enduring immense pain from these abuses.
The sentencing came after an eight-week trial where prosecutors argued Saunders leveraged his position of authority over young Indigenous Catholics who lived in the Kimberley diocese. This case marks one of the highest-ranking Catholic officials convicted for sexual abuse in Australia's history.
