The Aporia
In November 2009, Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist and U.S.-born Muslim of Palestinian descent, killed 13 people and wounded 32 others during a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas. On October 5, 2024, President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad recommended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, marking the first military execution in over 60 years. Hasan was sentenced to death for his actions in 2013 and will be executed by a date set by the Army Secretary. The shooting occurred at a medical facility on Fort Hood, which served as a staging point for soldiers deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan; Hasan had previously communicated online with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. This execution follows multiple requests made over the years by Hegseth since 2013, making Hasan the first U.S. soldier executed after a court-martial since Pvt. John Bennett in 1961. The Army policy mandates that executions must occur within 150 days of presidential approval but no sooner than 60 days. The time and place for the execution have yet to be announced.
Convicted Fort Hood mass shooter Nidal Hasan will be put to death in the same manner and place that he carried out his bloody rampage
