The Aporia
In November 2009, Nidal Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, shot and killed 13 people and wounded 32 others at Fort Hood, Texas. On October 5, 2023, Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell announced that President Donald Trump had approved the execution of Hasan by firing squad, a decision recommended by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. This will be the first U.S. military execution since 1961. The Army Secretary is responsible for setting the time and place of the execution, which must occur within 60 to 150 days after approval. Hasan was convicted in 2013, choosing not to contest his fate during trial. During the shooting, he shouted "Allahu Akbar." The incident highlighted tensions over U.S. military occupations in Iraq and Afghanistan, with evidence suggesting Hasan had online communications with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. This decision marks a significant shift in U.S. military justice policies regarding capital punishment.
