The Aporia
President Donald Trump approved the execution by firing squad of Nidal Hasan, an Army major and psychiatrist who killed 13 people and wounded over 30 others during a shooting at Fort Hood, Texas, in November 2009. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced that Secretary of War Pete Hegseth recommended and Trump approved the execution method. The Army secretary will set the time and place for the execution.
Hasan was convicted by a military jury in 2013 and sentenced to death. During his trial, he admitted to opening fire while shouting "Allahu Akbar" and claimed his actions were motivated by opposition to U.S. military occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan. He also had previously communicated with radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.
This execution would mark the first use of a firing squad for an American service member since 1961, making it a significant legal and historical event.
