The Aporia
On October 6, US President Donald Trump commented during the ongoing eight-month-long war between the United States and Israel against Iran that nobody knows who is currently in charge of Iran. According to Trump, both Iran's primary leadership and secondary leaders are no longer present, leaving confusion about current Iranian governance. However, Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated on Sunday that the US is well aware of whom they should be dealing with in Iran and how decisions are made within the country. He argued that the real issue lies in inconsistent messaging from American officials.
The conflict began on February 28 when Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, was killed during initial strikes; his son, Mojtaba Khamenei, succeeded him but has not been seen since he too was injured. Strikes by both sides have led to thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. This ongoing war highlights significant diplomatic uncertainty and confusion regarding leadership in Iran, complicating peace efforts and international relations.
Fuel prices that have risen in response to the war are also a risk to Trump's Republican Party ahead of the November US midterm elections in which control of Congress is at stake.
