The heavy rain, which was part of a slow-moving weather system, caused significant flooding and washouts in various areas, including Cape Breton Island. More than 200 mm of rain fell in parts of the island, with some private weather stations recording totals as high as 250 mm.
The flooding triggered local states of emergency in three counties on Cape Breton Island: Inverness, Victoria, and Richmond. Multiple roads were closed due to flooding, and conditions remained dangerous throughout the region.
Environment Canada had issued rainfall warnings for central and eastern Nova Scotia, and all of P.E.I., predicting up to 120 mm of rain in some areas between Friday and Monday. Some regions were forecasted to see rainfall of 10 mm per hour.
The death is not believed to be suspicious, according to the RCMP. The province's premier, Tim Houston, expressed his condolences for the woman's loved ones, saying "My thoughts are with her loved ones and everyone who is grieving this tragic loss."
