The Aporia
Ryo Uchimiya, a 51-year-old chef at Nobu Malibu who had worked there since its early days, was killed in a multi-vehicle crash near Carbon Canyon Road on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) in Malibu around 7 a.m. on Saturday morning. Uchimiya was asleep in his parked car while preparing for a catering job in Santa Monica when a 16-year-old driver, traveling eastbound at least 50 mph, veered across the fog line and struck him head-on with an SUV. The impact caused Uchimiya's car to collide with two others.
Video footage from the scene shows the violent collision and subsequent chain reaction. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department confirmed that no arrests had been made as of early Sunday morning, although they determined the manner of death was accidental. A local resident, former Malibu mayor Jefferson “Zuma Jay” Wagner, noted frequent dangerous encounters between drivers and cyclists on PCH near Nobu.
