On Tuesday, Malaysia began repatriating around 1,476 Myanmar nationals to their war-torn homeland, despite warnings from the UN and human rights groups about unsafe conditions in Myanmar. This first group is part of a plan by Kuala Lumpur to return 5,000 people over time who are currently detained in Malaysian immigration facilities. The Rohingya, a persecuted Muslim minority that fled Myanmar after violent crackdowns starting in 2017, comprise around two-thirds of the approximately 190,000 Myanmar refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia. Rights groups fear these returnees will face persecution and forced conscription into Myanmar's military. Dozens of buses carrying migrants arrived at a stadium near the Lumut naval base before being processed for transportation to Myanmar by ship.
