Story summary

Beverly Vance, the mother of Vice President JD Vance, said she had no idea that her son's 2021 comment about Democrats being "a bunch of childless cat ladies" would be taken seriously by others. JD Vance made the remark during an interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News in 2021 while he was a Senate candidate, and it became a talking point in President Donald Trump's 2024 campaign. Singer-songwriter Taylor Swift even referenced the comment when she endorsed Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. Beverly Vance defended her son's statement, saying that he meant it as a joke and was simply trying to be funny. She admitted that she didn't realize Swift had taken a shot at her son over his comment until it was pointed out to her. JD Vance himself has previously acknowledged that the comment was a mistake in his book. The controversy surrounding the comment highlights the ongoing debate about personal attacks and insults in politics.
