The Aporia
Russian attacks on Ukraine are becoming more devastating due to new jet-powered drones that are harder to shoot down. In August alone, Russia launched nearly 3,000 of these drones, overwhelming Ukraine's air defense systems. Ukrainian forces have responded with missiles and fighter jets but find it too costly. As a result, Ukraine is racing to develop low-cost countermeasures against the high-flying drones that can reach up to 7 kilometers in altitude, far beyond the range of most handheld anti-aircraft weapons. For instance, Vasyl (known by the call sign Racoon), a portable rocket operator near Kyiv, found his equipment ineffective against these jet-powered drones flying at four to five kilometers high. This shift has caused significant disruptions across Ukraine, affecting businesses and daily life more severely than during previous stages of the war since Russia's full-scale invasion in February 2022.
