On August 21 and August 24, 2026, U.S. Coast Guard and FBI personnel boarded two energy tankers in the Gulf of Mexico after cyberattacks compromised their computer networks while bound for Texas. The VL Prosperity, a 1,093-foot Liberian-flagged crude oil tanker, was one of the affected ships, with Iranian state media claiming hackers disabled its propulsion, navigation, and cargo systems for 30 hours, cutting off communications. Although U.S. officials have not publicly blamed Iran, they are investigating whether these attacks are linked to Iran or another foreign adversary. The Coast Guard confirmed malicious cyber activity was detected during the assessment of IT systems on board the vessels. Experts warn that such incidents pose a significant threat to ports and waterways.
