The Aporia
Paul Chan Mo-po, the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong, stated that the city plans to increase its gold holdings to strengthen its position as an international financial center. This move is expected to attract more central banks looking to store their gold due to geopolitical concerns. The plan includes exploring the construction of new vaults in the Northern Metropolis development project, a megadevelopment aimed at expanding Hong Kong's influence in precious metal trading and other commodities markets. Chan also noted that while Hong Kong was under no pressure to raise interest rates after the US rate hike, authorities would closely monitor economic conditions. This strategy aims to bolster Hong Kong’s financial ecosystem by leveraging its role in global gold market transactions.
