According to recent research by Zoopla published on November 6, 2026, Dover was identified as the most affordable town for home buyers in the South East of Britain, despite a typical home there costing nearly three times annual household earnings. The study analyzed 929 towns across Britain, finding that a typical home is valued at £299,100, equivalent to 4.3 times annual household income. In London, the most affordable borough was Tower Hamlets with homes costing 4.91 times a household income. Richard Donnell, executive director at Zoopla, noted that while house prices have been rising more slowly than incomes, higher mortgage rates are still making home purchases more expensive monthly. Affordability varies widely across Britain; towns in northern England and Scotland generally offer better value relative to local earnings. However, lower house prices do not always make it easier to buy a home due to factors like employment access, deposits required, and mortgage costs. Buyers now have more homes to choose from compared to the previous year, with greater potential for price negotiation especially in southern England.
