A Robinson R44 II helicopter crashed into Biscayne Bay near Key Biscayne off Miami on Wednesday morning around 11:30 a.m., leaving one person dead and two others injured. The deceased pilot was identified as Tomas Pendas, 63, president of Global Aerials, which owned the aircraft. The two survivors, Ryan McCoy (52) and Ryan Ferraro (27), were released from the hospital after suffering minor injuries.
The helicopter had been on a photography flight to document boats during a "Poker Run" event. Emergency services including the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, City of Miami Fire Rescue, Key Biscayne Fire Rescue, U.S. Coast Guard, and MDSO Marine Patrol responded to the scene where divers recovered the submerged wreckage.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the cause of the crash.
