A French maritime patrol aircraft, the Atlantique 2, which was deployed to Romania's Mihail Kogalniceanu air base on October 18, will extend its stay by several more weeks in response to attacks on merchant ships in the Black Sea. The decision came after NATO members Romania and Bulgaria requested reinforcements due to increasing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, which has left them vulnerable. The Atlantique 2 is equipped to detect submarines, warships, and small threats like sea drones and mines. The Black Sea remains vital for trade routes carrying grain, oil, and other commodities, making it a strategic area for NATO countries including Bulgaria, Romania, Georgia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia. France’s extended presence aims to ensure the safety of navigation in this critical waterway.
