McDonald's CEO Christopher Kempczinski announced on Wednesday that the company will introduce cheaper menu items and mix-and-match meal deals across 1,900 U.S. locations as part of an eight-week pilot program. This move comes after a significant decline in customer traffic and sales growth; from July to September, comparable sales increased by only 0.2%, down from 2.4% the previous year, while overall foot traffic at McDonald's stores dropped 4.6% compared to the same period last year, according to Placer.ai data. Kempczinski acknowledged that McDonald’s had failed to meet the needs of low-income diners seeking affordable options and emphasized the importance of offering compelling value propositions for budget-conscious customers. The new offerings are expected to roll out nationwide in 2027, with meal deals priced between $3.50 and $4.00, featuring items such as the McDouble, McChicken, and chicken nuggets.
