Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) won Tennessee's gubernatorial race on November 4, 2026, securing 45.4% of the vote. Her closest competitor, Democratic City Councilor Jerri Green, received 43.1%, with conservative independent David Hatley getting 9.3%. Polls had consistently predicted a significant lead for Blackburn, but concerns arose due to Hatley's strong performance as an independent candidate. Hatley, barred from running under the Republican banner because of a 1998 felony conviction for bank fraud, raised over $12 million and garnered substantial conservative support, which was seen as potentially siphoning off votes from Blackburn. This election marked the continuation of Republicans' dominance in Tennessee statewide races; the last Democrat to win such an election was Phil Bredesen in 2006.
The results were hardly surprising — the last Democrat to win a statewide election in Tennessee was Phil Bredesen in 2006.
Democrats had held out hope in public statements that Hatley would siphon off enough voters to clear the way for Green until the end, to no avail.
Blackburn’s victory by a solid margin, despite Hatley siphoning away a notable number of conservative voters, serves to further showcase the deep-red nature of Tennessee.
