On November 2, 2026, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Oliver Blanco in Washington. This marked Blanco's first visit to the US since being named to his post by interim President Delcy Rodriguez, who took power after American forces ousted former leader Nicolás Maduro in January. During their meeting at the State Department, both officials discussed progress on Venezuelan-led reconciliation talks aimed at institutional reforms for free and fair elections. Rubio urged the release of remaining political prisoners jailed under Maduro's rule as part of Venezuela’s transition to democracy. The Trump administration supports negotiations between Rodriguez's government and opposition groups to overhaul Venezuela's electoral council and top court before planned elections in 2027.
