The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is expected to raise interest rates to an 18-year high of 4.85% on November 7, 2026, amid concerns over persistent inflation. This would be the fifth rate hike this year and could push mortgage holders' monthly payments up by a cumulative $500 for a typical $600,000 loan. Major bank economists predict that real GDP growth will drop to just 1% by mid-2027 from an earlier estimate of 1.8%, with growth barely recovering to 1.1% in 2027. The increased rates and rising oil prices are contributing factors, leading to fears the economy could slip into recession, leaving thousands unemployed. Treasurer Jim Chalmers may face pressure to cut government spending further as a result of these measures.
