On November 2, 2026, Alberta’s new electoral riding boundaries were revealed in the legislature, sparking controversy. The NDP, led by Naheed Nenshi, claims that Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservatives are gerrymandering ridings in Lethbridge and Calgary to gain an unfair advantage in the next election scheduled for October 18, 2027. Meanwhile, Alberta Chief Electoral Officer Gordon McClure has warned about time constraints to implement the changes before the election date. The panel chair dismissed constitutional concerns over the new boundaries, but a minority of the panel cautioned that some changes fall outside the mandate. This process, which usually is administrative, now faces accusations of U.S.-style gerrymandering aimed at benefiting one political party.
Premier Danielle Smith’s United Conservatives are aiming to use their legislative majority to rig the new boundaries in order to give themselves an unfair advantage in next year’s election.
