US voters headed to polls on November 3, 2026, for midterms seen as a referendum on President Trump's record. The elections were the most expensive in US history, with many people already casting their ballots ahead of time. Trump campaigned vigorously, holding rallies in traditional Republican strongholds and promising 5,000 dollars to every adult US citizen if his party retained control of both the House and Senate. Democrats faced internal divisions highlighted by disputes in Michigan's Senate race, allowing Trump to portray them as extreme leftists threatening national security. Should Democrats win either chamber, they could block legislation and investigate the Trump administration. However, even with a Democratic-controlled Congress, Trump would retain executive authority and veto power.
The parties have been making their final pitches on the eve of the hotly contested November 3 races, which are being seen as a referendum on the controversial president’s record.
But the Democrats have faced their own challenges during the campaign with internal divisions, underlined by a fallout in the Michigan Senate race, and the president has sought to portray them as hard-left extremists who pose a threat to the country.
If the party was to gain one or both chambers it would be able to block legislation and launch investigations into the conduct of Mr Trump’s White House.
