Hong Kong will establish a dedicated Building Maintenance Support and Services Council as part of regulatory reforms following a deadly blaze at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po last November. The council, announced by Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu, aims to oversee building renovations by assigning inspection consultants to property owners, handling tendering processes, and evaluating contractor performance. Financial Secretary Paul Chan Mo-po will lead the new body, which industry representatives say will help legitimate contractors return to the market after being intimidated by bid-rigging syndicates. The council is expected to ensure only law-abiding, qualified firms participate in renovation projects, potentially lowering costs for homeowners in the long run.
