On October 27, 2026, two high-speed trains collided near Toledo, central Spain, resulting in at least 69 deaths and numerous injuries. The crash occurred just after 9 AM local time when one train hit the rear of another that had stopped on the tracks. Spain’s rail system operator ADIF suspended services between Madrid and Seville following the incident. Authorities initially reported at least 10 fatalities but revised this number due to ongoing recovery efforts.
The mayor of Urda, Manuel Galán, stated that civil protection authorities requested his town hall to prepare a sports pavilion for affected passengers. Spain’s transport minister later attributed the disaster to human errors by rail traffic controllers who had authorized a moving train to accelerate towards the stationary one without proper oversight.
