On October 31, 2026, Saudi air defenses intercepted a "hostile drone" in the Riyadh region without causing any injuries, according to Turki al-Malki, the spokesman for the Saudi-led military coalition. In recent weeks, Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis have intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia, including strikes that forced the closure of Riyadh airport for two weeks and led to the cancellation of major events, threatening the kingdom's economic diversification plans. More than 1,600 people have been killed and over 275,000 displaced since renewed hostilities began in Yemen this summer.
Yemen's Iran-backed Houthis have ramped up attacks on Saudi Arabia, including by launching deadly strikes on Riyadh airport that forced its closure for two weeks and the cancellation of flagship events — threatening the kingdom's economic diversification plans.
In July, a fragile 2022 truce fell apart after the Houthis allowed an Iranian plane to land in Yemen's capital Sanaa in defiance of Saudi control over Yemeni airspace, setting off a spate of attacks.
