As of October 30, 2026, three children are in intensive care with E. coli infections linked to a pumpkin patch operated by Brookshire Farms in San Luis Obispo, California. The County of San Luis Obispo Public Health Department issued an advisory on October 27 confirming five cases of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection, potentially originating from the pumpkin patch. The suspected exposure period was between October 16 and October 26.
Health officials are investigating a possible link to the pumpkin patch, which closed just days before Halloween. County Health Officer Dr. Christy Mulkerin stated that they are working diligently to identify the source of these infections to protect public health. Young children under 5 years old and older adults are particularly vulnerable to E. coli infections, with symptoms including cramping, severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, and dehydration typically appearing within three to ten days of exposure.
The Public Health Department advises that anyone who visited Brookshire Farms during the suspected period should monitor for gastrointestinal symptoms and seek immediate medical attention if necessary.
