Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston's office has criticized Sibo Chen, an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University, for commenting on a proposed artificial intelligence data centre in Point Tupper, Cape Breton. Chen had spoken to CBC News about valid public concerns over water usage and electricity rate hikes related to the $10-billion project by EverWind Fuels. William Burns, a communications adviser with Houston's office, called Chen’s remarks "irresponsible" and "uninformed." The premier doubled down on this criticism during a press conference on October 29th, saying he was glad his staff had sent the critical email to provide additional information to someone lacking in knowledge. This stance has drawn criticism from The Association of Nova Scotia University Teachers, which accused Premier Houston of political intimidation and a threat to academic freedom.
