Dolores Huerta, a 96-year-old labor rights leader and civil rights icon, died on Wednesday according to her family. Huerta co-founded the United Farm Workers (UFW) with Cesar Chavez and was known for her advocacy on behalf of migrant farm workers in California's Central Valley. She passed away at home as announced by her foundation.
The New York Post reported that just months before her death, Huerta revealed allegations of rape against Chavez, prompting many organizations to remove his name from public monuments. However, the cause of Huerta’s death has not been released and other outlets like ABC News did not mention these allegations in their reports.
Huerta's legacy includes significant improvements in working conditions for farm workers through organizing strikes and walkouts, earning her a place as one of the foremost women in U.S. labor history. Her activism continued into her 90s with appearances at protests and speaking engagements across the country on various social justice issues.
