Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, who was overseeing the criminal case against former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, died at age 92 on October 28, 2026. Hellerstein had been appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 1998 and served until his death. He presided over numerous high-profile cases, including those involving Donald Trump and litigation related to the September 11, 2001 attacks. Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, are charged with conspiracy to commit torture and narco-terrorism; a new judge will now be randomly assigned to take over the case.
